7 things successful people never apologize for at work
7 things successful people never apologize for at work7 things successful people never apologize for at workIf you work, you have guilt. Whether its deadlines, time with family or shutting off email, its easy to fall into the trap of believing we owe our whole lives to our employers and, as a result, apologizing all the time.We can even end up apologizing for things were good at. What about that time you finished a project early and your co-worker gave you some side-eye, so you apologize for being ahead of the curve? Or when you got a promotion and someone at your same level was passed over - did you drop that sorry bomb then, too? While being mindful and grateful are always important qualities of any successfuls persons career path, it is also important to be confident and bold with your abilities and responsibilities. Being self-assured is an attractive career quality. False humility can be cloying and will make people dislike you.Confidence should be your greatest tool for your c areer- assuming of course that you are in a job that fits your skills. Without confidence your employer would notlage have found you. Everything about the job search, and being promoted in your career is supported by confidence, executive career coach Tina Mertel explains. Confidence allows you to state what you deserve, whats not working, and what you want. Confidence helps you build relationships with those you manage, your peers, your customers, and your vendors. Without confidence you may be hoping to be noticed or wondering why your work isnt recognized. Here are things you should never (ever) apologize for at workThings That Are Out Of Your ControlAs a hard-working professional, there are certain parts of your career that you should take ownership of meeting deadlines, being an active participant in meetings and following directions. But regardless of industry, there are certain experiences and outcomes that frankly, you just cant control, no matter how well you do your job. A lot of those things are related to how other people, or other teams, behave. Take for example if a client misinterprets you, and you thought you were very clear, Mertel says. You should go to the facts, relay them to your manager, and ask or suggest what should be done next. Skip the apology. While it can be an unfortunate situation that puts your company or manager in a bad light, if you did everything you could to do your job, you shouldnt apologize for a reaction that you couldnt predict. For Working Faster Than OthersSo your bestie likes to spend a lot of time catching up on the Facebook interwebs and on G-chat, but when it comes to her deadlines at work, shell wait until the last, hottest, second to submit her work. We all have different working styles, and while neither are right or wrong, neither warrant an apology, either. Sometimes, people feel uncomfortable if they pfote in their portion of an assignment early. Its good to be prompt and responsible, explains Amy Cooper Hak im, Ph.D., an industrial-organizational psychology practitioner and workplace expert. Submitting work early shows that youve planned your time well and that you are organized and on top of things. For Standing Up When Something Doesnt Sit RightThough its true that no one likes a tattle-tale, its also true that your gut is the smartest source you have at your disposal. If you do see something that you know could pose a threat to an employee or the company as a whole, you have to follow that Spidey-sense and say something. If you state your truth, it may be uncomfortable but needed, Mertel says. If you witness an act against company policy, you should report it to human resources. It doesnt make sense to apologize to another for reporting them. You are simply prioritizing company policy and most likely your job in front of a friendship or relationship. For Being Vocal in a MeetingIts sometimes simpler to nod along instead of engaging your brain in every long meeting. But, if youre not engaged, then youre not a productive member of the team. However, as business psychologist, career coach and content director, Kate Sullivan explains, if you do have a useful opinion in a meeting, you should never apologize for sharing it with the group.Dive right into your point.Meetings are meant for an exchange of ideas- if everything was completely decided and no input was needed, youd probably get a memo instead. So dont feel guilty for giving your input- thats what the meeting is for, she notes. Instead of apologizing for speaking- the dreaded Im sorry, but or Excuse me, but interjection- just speak up when theres a break in the dialogue. This is important If you really need to give yourself a lead-in, link it to what someone else is saying instead of apologizing for speaking. Try saying to build on what Dan just said or An interesting thing Jill, if you look at the figures, I think youll see thatJust make sure youre not talking so much that other people are shutting down. For Focusing on Your WorkThough water-cooler chit-chat can be engaging and ripe with gossip, its not a productive way to spend your workday, when really, youd probably rather get home to your partner or out to happy hour with your friends earlier than later. If one of your co-workers tries to loop you into a conversation, dont apologize for needing to get back to work. As Hakim says, youre there for a purpose and it doesnt need an explanation. Politely and directly, share that you have a deadline and look forward to chatting another time. But, never say that you are sorry for doing so.For Taking a Vacation or Personal DaysRepeat after us vacations are necessary. Did you say it out loud? No? Say it now. As Sullivan reminds us, breaks are not only needed but theyre healthy for our mental health and happiness. Our careers cant flourish unless we take time for self-care, and lounging on a beach or gallivanting about Europe will help you disconnect. Rather than skipping your vacation or apo logizing for requesting time off, think about it as a financial transaction. How many vacation days do you have in the bank? Two weeks? How much is your average biweekly paycheck? Now think about giving up a full paycheck and working for free for two weeks. Doesnt feel great, huh?, Sullivan asks. Thats what giving up your vacation is- giving up compensation that youre owed. Apologizing for asking for part of your compensation doesnt make sense its like saying youre sorry for asking for your paycheck. Take your vacation with no guilt and no apologies. Youve literally earned itFor Setting Boundaries on Your Own TimeYou never need to say youre sorry for logging off, taking off or removing yourself from situations that make you uncomfortable as an employee. You work a certain set of hours in the day and its perfectly okay to not be available at midnight or on a Sunday. Be clear about when you will and wont work and stick to that without apologizing. Its your right to have personal time- and itll set a good example for other people on your team to start dialing back their availability and putting some boundaries on their life balance, Sullivan says. That will help everyone on your team perform better, because theyll be able to recharge outside the office instead of constantly checking in.

7 Essential Habits of Incredibly Happy People7 Essential Habits of Incredibly Happy PeopleMake these commitments to increase yur happiness and improve your life.In her book The How of Happiness A Scientific Approach to Getting the Life You Want, University of California-Riverside professor of psychology Sonja Lyubomirsky explains how each of us has the ability to attain greater happiness.According to her research, 50 percent of our happiness is determined by our genetics. Each of us is born with a genetically determined happiness set point says Lyubomirsky. Life circumstances, such as where we live, our marital status, our physical appearance, and our levels of wealth and health, have little bearing on our happiness only 10 percentThe good news? Lyubomirsky says the remaining portion of our happiness 40 percent is within our control. Here are seven different ways you can consciously boost your happiness.Nurture your relationshipsTheres no denying the value of a strong professiona l network. In fact, the most successful professionals are often adept at networking. However, the personal connections you make offline are just as invaluable. People who maintain five or mora close friendships tend to be happier, live longer and have a higher quality of life.Make time to visit with friends and loved ones. It may be convenient to text, email or tweet, but the happiest people make a point to nurture their close relationships face-to-face. Pick up the phone, call your best friend, and schedule a coffee date ASAP.Actively pursue your goalsWhen was the last time you thought about your long-term goals ? According to David Niven, author of 100 Simple Secrets of the Best Half of Life, those who could identify a goal they were pursuing were 19 percent more likely to feel satisfied with their lives and 26 percent more likely to feel positive about themselves.Take some time this week to write down your goals. As an added bonus, volunteering is a great way to boost your job search.Want to get involved in a cause you truly care about? Visit sites like VolunteerMatch.org and All for Good to find the right opportunity for youLet go of resentmentForgiving and forgetting may be easier said than done, but experts say its a necessary step to achieving greater happiness. According to the Mayo Clinic, if youre holding a grudge, youre also holding on to negative emotions that are standing in the way of your own happiness. When youre able to let go of you r bitterness and embrace forgiveness, youre freeing up more space for positive emotions. Unsure how to begin this healing process? Check out Huffington Posts article on the best way to get over a grudge.Express your gratitudeA survey by Ladders found that saying thank you isnt just a polite gesture its an essential parte of the interview process. However, showing gratitude does more than simply boost your job search. Those who regularly reflect on the things theyre thankful for sleep better, feel more alive and are overall happier. According to Robert Emmons, UC Davis psychologist and author of Thanks How the New Science of Gratitude Can Make You Happier, simply keeping a gratitude journal where you document moments for which youre thankful can considerably improve your well-being and life satisfaction.Take the first step to expressing more gratitude by participating in Huffington Posts 10-day gratitude challenge and see how it affects your outlook on life. Instead of trying to have it all, Barnard College president Debora Spar recommends focusing on having what matters most.Eric Sinoway, co-author of Howards Gift Uncommon Wisdom to Inspire Your Lifes Work, agrees. As you progress in your career and life, more responsibilities and opportunities will come your way. At some point youll need to drop something to maintain your balance. How to be a powerful young person at work
How to be a powerful young part at workHow to be a powerful young person at workIf youve ever been told that you have a baby face, you know how it feels to not be taken seriously, especially at a corporate job- but therbeie are ways to make it work. With all the flexibility you have in life early in your career, being the young person at the office can be a source of power, nota burden. It just takes some strategy.Make sure your job has meaning for youPassion is powerful, so make sure your job is feeding your urge to grow and change the world. The bonus youre much more likely to rise faster and get more power if you are spending your time on something you actually care about. The executive summary of the Deloitte Millennial Survey 2017 pointed to the fact that many young people want their work to make a difference.Millennials feel accountable for many issues in both the workplace and the wider world. However, it is primarily in and via the workplace that they feel most able to make an impact. Opportunities to be involved with good causes at the local level, many of which are enabled by employers, provide millennials with a greater feeling of influence, the summary said.Speak upWhen you have less seniority, you can be easily dismissed. Make that impossible by speaking up, visibly learning and sharing your ideas. The key choose the right time and place. Instead of pretending youre an insta-expert, ask good questions and volunteer for assignments. Your bosses will be intrigued by your confidence, and youll pick up skills more quickly.Create somethingIf you can find some little niche that no one else has, you have the chance to be whats called an intrapraneur someone who creates something within a larger organization. If your bosses support your curiosity, you can end up being a leader in your nicheBe a leader without the titleWhat many people find out is that a title doesnt make you powerful. Power comes instead from your confidence and your manner. Dont be arrogant or try to boss your peers. Instead, learn how to pick up skills, help others, be collaborative and be a pleasure to work with. One piece of advice we like Make everyone feel as if theres room on the lifeboat.Self-leadership is also important before you tell others what to do, do you know how to keep yourself on deadline? How to manage your own behavior? Are you maintaining beliefs about yourself or your work that are limiting you? Good leaders lead themselves before they try to tell others what to do.How will you know youre there? If you become the person everyone comes to with their questions, youre already a leader. The opportunities soon follow. If rising within a corporate structure isnt your dream, then nurturing your natural leadership skills will make your independent efforts that much more successful, whether youre freelancing or starting your own company.Find mentors and sponsors, and treat them wellEspecially when youre starting out, you may need someone with experience t o give you advice or point out all the corporate pitfalls.Catalyst defines a mentor as someone who informally or formally helps you navigate your career, providing guidance for career choices and decisions. This person helps you figure out potential ways to meet specific career goals. You could also have a sponsor a mentor within your company, who speaks up for you, suggests you for projects, and generally has your back.If youre lucky enough to find someone like that, remember to treat them well and respect their time. The care and nurturing of a mentorA CNN reportertweeted today about the mindset young people should keep in mind when seeking a mentor.Recently spoke to a group of college students about mentors. One thing surprised the class people are not obligated to help you.- Tanzina Vega (tanzinavega) April 5, 2017Whilethe idea that millennials are entitled has certainly been thrown out there, there are also arguments for why they arent. But this tweet (which is one of a stream of m any) points to a larger issue- how you should approach a mentor. While mentors are supposed to help guide you, respectfully keep in mind that they are not guaranteed. How to find a sponsorCatalyst defines a sponsor as a senior leader or other person who uses strong influence to help you obtain high-visibility assignments, promotions, or jobs.Unlike mentorship, where you drive the relationship, this person advocates for you with other high-level leaders- sometimes in spaces where youre not present. So where to you look for a high-powered sponsor like this in your office?Sylvia Ann Hewlett wrote about who to seek out in large and small companiesin the Harvard Business Review.Would-be sponsors in large organizations are ideally two levels above you with line of sight to your role in smaller firms, theyre either the founder or president or are part of his or her inner circle, she wrote. In terms of the type of relationship youll have with the sponsor, Hewlett had these words of advice Eff icacy trumps affinity youre looking not for a friend but an ally.Bear these ideas in mind during your hunt for a career sponsor.Use social media to your advantageWhile its well-known that employers will probably scout outyour social media profiles and you already know that what you post could hurt your career, its good to know just how prevalent that is.A 2015 Jobvite survey of 1,404 recruiting and human resources professionals spanning several industries found that 92% of recruiters use social media for their jobs, 4% dont use it as part of their process and 4% arent sure. But in terms of knowing how seriously people take social media platforms when checking out potential candidates, you havedefinitely been there, done that, andheard it all before. So if you dont have separate social media handles for personal and work use, consider keeping things professional by using some of your platformsto promote your companys brand in-between personal (and work-appropriate) posts. The bright side of social media is that smart posting - and replies - could bring your thoughts to the attention of veterans in your industry who otherwise would never have noticed your unique talents.Job-hop if you have toIn previous generations, job-hopping was frowned upon - but with the rise of gig work, permalancing and the decentralization of many companies through remote workers, many young people no longer plan their careers around being at the same company for decades. Go where the culture suits you.Gallup reportedin 2016 that60% of millennials say they are open to a different job opportunity - 15 percentage points higher than the percentage of non-millennial workers who say the same. When to hop? Three major reasons 1) when your salary wont go up even after years of dedicated work 2) the culture isnt a good fit - including any condescension about your age or intelligence and 3) youre just not growing your skills. Think about fleshing out what kind of work would feel like the ultimate use of your time, and make a planfor how to get there.

Gender diversity provides huge benefits in the workplace. pWhile some industries have made significant advancements in gender diversity, some industries lag further behind... and the construction industry is well-known for being in the latter category. If someone says, construction workers, youll likely picture a group of men in yellow hard hats analyzing an architects plans or laying bricks on top of a scaffold. And men at work signs only help to reinforce this image.pThis stereotype is rooted in reality. When was the last time you actually spotted a woman on a construction site? Or hired a female plumber or carpenter? Your answer is most likely never. In fact, the Bureau of Labor Statisticsreports that only 3.4% of the total of 8.3 million construction employees are women.pBut the construction industry has a lot mora to offer than steel-toed boots and hard hats, and it needs women to help advance the industry in this era of rapid change. Here are 5 reasons wh y women joining the workforce or looking to make a pivot should consider a career in construction.h21. Fuel Innovation/h2pNot only is diversity the socially and morally right thing to do, but it is also actually an excellent business strategy. pResearch presented in the Harvard Business Reviewshows that diverse teams develop more innovative ideas. This is further supported by a study conducted by Gallupon the performance of gender-diverse teams versus single-gender teams, which found that the difference in backgrounds and perspectives led to better business performance and problem-solving. h22. Capitalize on Demand/h2pThe construction industry is currently experiencing a labor shortage. The industry itself is booming and projected to be one of the fastest-growing industries, with total spending projected to exceed $1.45 trillion in 2023/a. However, most construction companies are unable to meet the rising demand. pAccording to the Associated General Contractors of America/a, more th an 80% of contractors are experiencing difficulties filling hourly craft positions that represent the bulk of the construction workforce.pAnd demand isnt limited to individual contributor roles. Given the industry boom, there are a number of open stable and high-paying roles (any project managers out there?) waiting for the right candidateh23. Leadership Opportunities/h2pAccording to the Bureau of Labor Statistics/a, women compose only 7.7% of the total 1 million managerial positions in construction.br/pBut given the highly collaborative nature of construction work, more women in leadership roles would help drive innovation and enhance productivity.Furthermore, as a woman in construction in a leadership position, youd have the unique opportunity to drive change for the industry and make it a more attractive option for other women.h24. High-Income Potential/h2pSalaries for many skilled positions in construction are on the rise, making a construction career a prime choice for women lo oking for a high-paying job,pThe 2018 Construction Craft Salary Surveyconducted by the National Center for Construction Education and Research revealed that salaries for many skilled craft areas are increasing. Project managers and project supervisors topped the list at $92,523 and $88,355, respectively. The next set of highest-paying jobs include those of combo welders ($71,067), instrumentation technicians ($70,080), pipe welders ($69,222), power line workers ($68,262) and industrial electricians ($67,269). Of the 32 categories of workers in the survey, 19 positions earned an average salary of $60,000 or higher.h25. Sense of accomplishment/h2p The construction industry can give employees a unique sense of achievement. Yes, the job is stressful and the work can be demanding, but nothing beats the feeling of being able to build something from the ground up. pHow many professionals in other industries can point at a school, a hospital, or a skyscraper and say I helped build that?pThe construction industry has a long way to go in combating gender bias and supporting women in the workforce, but given the current demand for workers, theres no better time to pick up a sledgehammer (figurative or literal) and smash the gender stereotypes plaguing the construction industry.

How psychopaths are dominating the job world
How psychopaths are dominating the job worldHow psychopaths are dominating the job worldMadness is commonly understood to be a frequent bedfellow of creative genius but what about business acumen?A recent study performed by Board and Fritzon at the University of Surrey in England found various personality disorders to be much mora prevalent among high-level executives than the mentally ill criminals that inhabit Broadmoor. The idea that narcissists, sufferers of histrionic disorder and anankastic disorder are likely zipping past you on the career food chain isnt a novel one but studies begin to suggest more and more cases to be observed. This might be jarring when first read, but further analysis unmasks its reason.Successful and unsuccessful psychopathsThe study goes on to illustrate a fascinating distinction between the two types of psychopaths unsuccessful psychopaths lack either the faculty or the mettle to capitalize on the idiosyncratic way they view the world, while successful psychopaths let their psychosis take free rein. To reiterate this more sinisterly Those biologically incapable of considering others in an emotional sense are at an absolute advantage in the job market. In chorus with this is the demarcation of impulses vs. the question of severity. Is it that psychopaths who earn a place in the upper echelons of society are simply beset by a milder version of the same illnesses that plague the ones consumedby failure? Or, is it because what successful psychopaths lack in empathy, they make up for in restraint? The latter presumes theyre able to shackle instincts of self-destructionand pivot with unbridled grandiosity while the former sort of undermines the correlation altogether. It should be noted that the majority of studies on the subject have two ways of defining success Personal (wealth social status etc.) and simply avoiding imprisonment orinstitutionalization.Successful psychopaths in the workplaceAmbition, drive, and resourcefulness are the a pparent offspring of tunnel vision and a genius for manipulation. They were also found to be callous, guiltless and lacking empathy. Reliable data cant exclusively be obtained from just the diagnosis itself because the symptoms tend to manifest in a myriad of ways.Robert D. Hare pulls from 25 years of research to paint an imperatively disturbing portrait of mental deformity in his 1999 book Without Conscience The Disturbing World Of Psychopaths Among Us.In the book, Hares admission of the ruthless and magnetic charm that lives inside true psychopaths is habitually met with all the ways it deems them dangerous to our society. His definition is pretty clearRobert Hares definition of a psychopath is also a rubric to success Social predators who charm, manipulate and ruthlessly plow their way through life Completely lacking in conscience and feeling for others, they selfishly take what they want and do as they please, violating social norms and expect ations without the slightest sense of guiltor regret.Ultimately we are talking about illness here, the destruction of which has been greatly hindered by our own obsession and lionization of it. What worries me most about studies that magnify the link between success and sickness, is it adding further credence to the romanization of mental illness. Its bad enough that aspiring writers ache for a drip of the madness that led Woolf to the river Ouse, now we have to worry about young professionals attempting to adopt maladaptive qualities in a bid to inch their progress that much further along. The research is blameless, but I must caution those and their appraisal of it.

Calling It Quits Do It the Right Way!
Calling It Quits Do It the Right Way Calling It Quits Do It the Right Way Youve been unhappy for some time in your present position. It could be due to conflicts with your manager or coworkers, to lack of advancement opportunities, to salary concerns, or to any number of other issues. Youve considered all of your options, have weighed the pros and cons involved with each, and have even considered the impact on your personal and family lives. You have finally reached a decision that the best course of action is to leave your current position for another opportunity. So, how do you now proceed to communicateyour decision toyour current organization? This seems like itshould be the least of your worries after what youve just been through. However, the way you quit is a critical decision, one that can either strengthen your professional reputation and future opportunities or totally decimate them. The days of the two-week notice are a thing of the past in the fast-pacedworld that we liv e in, and not recognizing this could be to your detriment. Its important when negotiating a start date for your new position to consider the time youll need for your announcement to your current employer. How muchtime you need will depend on a number of factors, including (among others)- whether you are an individual contributor or manager- whether you are in a highly specialized position that is difficult to fill- and whether your current project is at a stage that would be difficult to recover from your loss. The following are several steps that you should consider when its time to quit, governed by your particular situationPrior Action Know What Your Departure Entails Through HRAre there any impediments to your departure, including documents that you may have signed when you first joined your current company? You should have answered this question prior to accepting another position. Can you not participate in the same type of activity with other competitors for a certain period o f time? Are there restrictions on taking your current clients with you to your new assignment? What benefits are you entitled to receive upon termination (e.g., pay for remaining vacation, earned overtime hours, unused sick leave)? When does your health coverage end (end of the month or at termination)? Is COBRA or other health plan coverage an option in the interim?Action 1 Inform Your Immediate Manager(s)This sounds rather simple, but in complex corporate organizations, you may report to two or more individuals (e.g., functional and direct-line),or you may be a project manager involved directly with managers of multiple groups.Plan to carry out this actionin person if at all possible. If you work remotely, do it via a scheduled telephone and/or video conference. In all cases, follow these notifications up with a formal letter to your management and HR indicating your planned termination date and your willingness to assist in the process of identifying a replacement and effectively transferring your knowledge and information to your assigned replacement.Action 2 Inform Your Direct Reports/SubordinatesDont waste time after you make your formal management announcements to inform your direct reports and/or subordinates. They need to hear the news directly from you in a group setting (if possible). This should be done the same day as you inform your management. Be prepared to answer your subordinatesquestions openly and honestly. Ease their concerns about your departure and let them know that you will untersttzung them and their interests however you can.Action 3 Inform Other Colleagues and CustomersThis is a little trickier. For company colleagues, you should look for the earliest opportunity to inform them after action No. 2is completed. For example, if they mention in a meeting that you have an upcoming action that is scheduled after your departure date, mention that you will assure your replacement will be up to speed, and then discuss your departure plans. No t telling your colleagues and thinking that they will somehow get the word from office gossip leaves them feeling that they were not important enough to you to inform them personally. On the other hand, going to them directly and making a point to tell them can seem like youre rather pretentious and believe your departure should be very important to them.Regarding informing your customers, you will need to clear your actions with your management and with HR (and possibly with your legal department) in advance.Proper communication of your departure plans not only displays professionalism and respect for your company and your colleagues, but it also paves the way for future business recommendations and opportunities. Do all that you can to support your current company, and your new company will recognize your efforts and see that it isgetting a winner. The global misery index has reached its highest levels in years
The global misery index has reached its highest levels in years The global misery index has reached its highest levels in years If you have been feeling down lately, recognize that it is not just you that is feeling sad, but also the world. According to a new study by Gallup that surveyed the emotions of 154,000 people in more than 145 countries, our Negative Experiences Index - an average of peopleâs reported physical pain, sadness, and anger, worry, stress - is the highest it has been since 2006.The world is feeling downWhatâs making us blue? The study does not go into the reasons behind the rising tide of negative emotions but suggests that worldwide âturmoilâ could account for it. In the United States, in particular, stress is what is on many Americansâ minds. They were the second-most likely to say they had experience stress the previous day with 49% of the population reporting it, a number that only ranks above the most stressed country: Greece.Positive emotions are also on the decline. Less than half of people worldwide - 46% - said did something interesting or learned something new in 2 017, a number that is lower than it was in the past few years. For Americans, this rise in negative emotions could be due to the rise in anxiety since 2017. A recent American Psychiatric Association poll suggests that economic and political anxiety could be at the root of the downturn in emotions. Americans said they were more anxious today than they were at the same time last year, citing worries about keeping themselves safe, keeping their families safe, bills, and the impact of politics on their life as answers. To float on top of a sea of bad emotions without getting pulled under, you need to honor your negative emotions as valid without wallowing in them. And then you need to celebrate your positive emotions without discounting them. Our brains can get easily trained to focus on mistakes and bad experiences, overlooking the positive. To retrain ourselves, try a practice of gratitude and list out tiny and big moments that made you feel good. That way, you teach yourself to notic e the interesting world around you and can go to bed each night on a high note.

3 Ways to Avoid Résumé Buzzword Banality
3 Ways to Avoid Résumé Buzzword Banality 3 Ways to Avoid Résumé Buzzword Banality Which of these words have you used to describe yourself on your LinkedIn profile or résumé? Responsible. Effective. Strategic. Analytical. Expert. Organizational. Specialized. Creative. Innovative. Experimental. Motivated. Driven. Patient. A recent LinkedIn study identified these as 13 of the most overused buzzwords worldwide in membersâ profiles for 2012 and 2013. âResponsibleâ was used twice as often as any other word on the list. In the right context, words like these can be extremely helpful in your efforts to depict yourself as an individual who can bring a valuable blend of knowledge, personality and mindset to a new employer. When used correctly, they can add substance to your claim of being an effective communicator. At the same time, they are too-often strung together as a veritable forest of buzzwords that convey no meaning and give lie to the boastful claim of excellent communications skills. Consider a résumé that contains at the top an introductory statement like: âResponsible professional who is motivated and driven to effectively get the job done.â It might well be that the person described is all these things, but the problem is that when these words are presented without context, their subject is reduced to a generic stereotype rather than a person of substance. Professional what? Is this person an engineer, a marketing professional, an X-Ray technician or chief cook and bottle washer? Responsible for what? Anyone who has ever held a job has been responsible for something. What are the nature, scope and size of those responsibilities? From this introductory sentence we donât know if we are reading the résumé of someone in his or her first or second job after college or someone well-seasoned and experienced in leading a corporate team with profit and loss responsibilities. Motivated? It is a great thing to be highly motivated. But to claim this for yourself without a context doesnât do much to distinguish yourself from everyone else. Rare indeed is someone who will be so brutally honest as to describe themselves on a LinkedIn profile or résumé as âoccasionally motivatedâ or âmoderately ambitious.â If you want to claim motivation as a personal attribute, then be specific. What kinds of actions has your motivation produced, and with what result? Your task is to show how all these, or whatever other wonderful characteristics, apply to you with specific detail. On LinkedInâs own blog, Christine Choi presents three best practices to adopt. 1. Tie words to actual results. âLink your skills to specific results that demonstrate your competence,â Choi writes. Figure out how all these buzzwords actually describe you and give the detail through which a reader will come to the conclusion you want, rather than just take your self-description on faith alone. For example, rather than simply asserting she's a solid communicator, a nurse might offer a bullet point that reads something like this: âEnhanced communication between physicians and families by educating parents on their childâs condition, support and care.â This level of detail enables the reader to imagine that nurse sitting with parents somewhere in a hospital, engaging in active dialogue. 2. Use active language. So often people define themselves by their responsibilities and leave it at that. It is not just about what you may have been responsible for, but rather how you exercised your authority to fulfill your responsibilities and what results you attained that separate you from everyone else. Rather than saying, âResponsible for marketing XYZ product,â you can give a mini-story with a bullet point like this: âManaged launch of XYZ product including: overseeing messaging development, creating print and online marketing advertisements, obtaining 2 key product endorsements and allocating advertising budget of $1 million among all media.â 3. Let others vouch for you. It's one thing to claim something about yourself, while it is much more forceful if others say it in your stead. âSeek out endorsements or recommendations from other reputable sources who can verify your talents,â Choi writes. After all, it is always better when someone can say, âI saw Joe be effective at â¦â rather than Joe saying, âIâm effective.â It is hard to overstate the value of an upfront contextual recommendation for your work on your profile from a current or former co-worker or supervisor. Put simply: either ditch the buzzwords, or supplement them with the language, stories and testimony of others that truly explain who you are, how you work, your attitudes and achievements. The devil really is in the details, and when you provide the right amount of detail you show that you're talented with the power to communicate your worth effectively. Happy hunting!

Johann Gutenberg and Invention of the Printing Press
Johann Gutenberg and Invention of the Printing Press Johann Gutenberg and Invention of the Printing Press Johann Gutenberg is nearly universally credited with being the inventor of the printing press, and the father of the modern printed book. Gutenberg was an early communications catalyst who invention of the printed book opened up the world to the quick and efficient spread of knowledge and ideas. The Invention of the Book Despite Gutenbergs cultural status as the forebear of the modern book production process- Time magazine named him Person of the Millennium in 1999- relatively little is known about the details of his life. Gutenbergs Life Johann Gutenberg was born into an upper-class family of goldsmiths in Mainz, Germany around 1395. Much of what else we know about Gutenbergs life is through legal documents of his time. For example, he promised to marry someone but didnt, and she took him to court; and he owed money from what seemed like a get-rich-quick scheme involving selling baubles to religious pilgrims.Tidbits of information from these and other legal documents and intense scholarly investigation suggest Gutenberg was a man passionately dedicated to the idea of the mass production of printed pages, an inventor who borrowed money in order to see his work through to completion- and one who was extremely secretive about his ideas while they were in development. One person who lent Gutenberg a substantial sum was Johann Fust. Fust eventually sued to get back his money and the accrued interest and seems to have taken over the original press, which had been put up as collateral. Gutenberg continued his printing career and appears to have continued modifying printing methods to enable additional efficiencies. At the end of his life, he was granted an allowance from the archbishop of Mainz for food and clothing, suggesting he lived out his days in relative comfort. Gutenbergs Printing Methods Some conjecture that Gutenbergs exposure to metal casting methods in the family goldsmithing business gave him the skills necessary to create the individual, reusable letters cast in metal- the movable type- to set pages. While the Chinese invented a form of movable type about five hundred years earlier and continued to make improvements to their methods, restrictions of the language, religion, culture, and materials kept the technology from widespread use.Whatever inspired Gutenberg to his printing ideas, he needed to have worked extremely diligently in a variety of subject areas- what we know now as chemistry and mechanical engineering- to bring the printing press to practical application. His metal type necessitated his invention of new, oil-based inks that would stick to the type. It also necessitated the creation of a device that could transfer- press- the ink evenly onto the pages. Its assumed that Gutenberg used a screw press to print his books. Similar devices were at the time used to make paper and to press grapes for wine.Improvements in paper production brought costs down and made the paper a viable substance for books, more economical than vellum. Gutenbergs Bibles The Gutenberg Bibles, which dates from the 1450s, are considered to be the first books printed in the Western world and, although they dont bear the printers name anywhere in the volumes, are attributed to Gutenbergs first printing efforts. Several of these are in the possession of the Morgan Library and Museum in New York City and are frequently on display. Gutenbergs Legacy Prior to the invention of the printing press, books existed in codex form; that is, books were hand-copied and a Bible would take around two years to produce. Most of the general public would have seen a book- that Bible- only in church, and all but the wealthy and learned would likely have to travel to get a look at one of the classic texts such as Homers Illiad. As book printing-publishing was established as a business, the first book trade fair was established in Frankfurt, Germany, not far from where Gutenberg printed his first Bible. The efficiencies of using movable type and a printing press to produce books quickly paved the way for the mass production of books and other reading material, including printed handbills advertising these early books- the first book marketing!Printed information caught on quickly as a method of communication. For the first time in history, ideas were literally put in the general publics hands in the form of the printed word, and book publishing enabled knowledge, thoughts and culture to spread at a rate faster than ever before. ASME Member Invited to Speak at Engineerâs Day Event in India ASME Member Invited to Speak at Engineerâs Day Event in India ASME Member Invited to Speak at Engineerâs Day Event in India Oct. 20, 2017 ASME member Emamul Haque, the 2015-2016 ASME Early Career Leadership Intern Program to Serve Engineering (ECLIPSE) intern to the Board of Governors, was the guest of honor and featured speaker at a special Engineerâs Day event last month at University of Petroleum & Energy Studies in Dehradun, India. ASME member Emamul Haque was invited to be the guest of honor at an event commemorating Engineers Day in India that was held at the University of Petroleum Energy Studies (UPES) in Dehradun, India, on Sept. 25. Haque, who served as the 2015-2016 ASME Early Career Leadership Intern Program to Serve Engineering (ECLIPSE) intern to the Board of Governors, was also the featured speaker during the special Engineers Day orientation session, which was arranged by the UPES ASME student section. Nearly 130 students and faculty filled the universitys auditorium to listen to Haques presentation, Quality Mechanical Engineering: Transforming the World through Technology, in which Haque discussed the disparity between what engineering students learn in school and the skills that are required in industry once they graduate, as well as how ASME can help provide students and early career engineers with opportunities to acquire these necessary skills. After his speech, which included a lengthy QA session with the audience, Haque met with the students and faculty from the university at an ASME information booth that had been set up for the occasion. The booth attracted a crowd of students and faculty members, according to Haque. By the end of the event, more than 90 students and 12 UPES professors had registered to become members of ASME.

How to Deal With an Angry Boss - The Muse
How to Deal With an Angry Boss - The Muse How to Deal With an Angry Boss Bosses can be volatile. One minute, theyâre bragging about their teamâs accomplishments to the executive team; the next, theyâre fuming that a project hasnât been completed. To some extent, thatâs expected- managers do have pressure-filled jobs, after all. But there are also bosses whose bad moods come out of nowhere- when on any day, in any instant, and with no warning, his or her mood can turn from pleasant to unbearably foul. And of course, your manager takes it out on everyone around him or her. Including you. No matter your bossâ mood, your work has to continue- ideally without ruining your entire workday. So how can you remain unaffected by your managerâs bad moods? Iâve been there, and Iâll tell you itâs not easy- but it can be done. Hereâs how. Donât Feed Off of It When your boss is making his or her rounds of the floor, announcing how nothingâs going right, deadlines are being missed, goals wonât be met, and no oneâs on track to deliver an important project on time, itâs likely that the rest of the team will take that cue to start thinking the same way. Weâve all seen it: When the boss is happy, the teamâs happy- and when the boss is down, the team is down. But itâs vital to remind yourself that just because your boss is in a bad mood, you donât have to follow suit. How do you resist? Start by keeping things in perspective. Is your boss in a terrible mood because a project is off track? If youâre not involved in that particular assignment, you donât need to let yourself be affected. If you are part of that project, make sure your manager knows youâre on top of your portion. Often, your projects and priorities arenât the same as those of your manager- so donât assume that whatâs causing the bad mood for your boss should influence your day, too. Do Look for Triggers Pay close attention to your bossâ thunderous moods, and see if you can detect a pattern. For example, is your boss more likely to get extra agitated the morning before his weekly executive report is due? Or after lunch on Thursday, when sheâs cramming to get her work done before she has to leave right at 5 PM for her kidâs ballet class? Or maybe itâs a daily routine that starts first thing in the morning and lasts until he hits his third cup of coffee. Whatever it is, if you can pinpoint the times and triggers that makes your boss more likely to take out his or her emotions on the team, you can either address them if possible (think: âHey John, I thought Iâd turn in my portion of the weekly report early so you can get a head start on itâ), or if out of your control, keep your distance until it passes. Which brings us to: Do Avoid When Possible Especially when you know your bossâ triggers- but even if you donât- itâs fully OK to avoid your boss when necessary (and possible). And, sure, itâs certainly not always possible. You may have an unavoidable meeting scheduled or an urgent question that needs to be answered face-to-face. But if you donât, know that itâs OK to email a question instead of braving your managerâs office, hold a minor update until the mood has passed, or put your headphones in to block out some of the negativity. It may not be a foolproof solution (bosses do seem to pull Office Space-style cubicle drive-bys quite often), but itâs a small step you can take to avoid the fallout. Donât Assume it Has Anything to Do With You When you find yourself in your bossâ line of fire, itâs easy to assume that something you did must be fueling that terrible temper. Just remember: Bosses have shortcomings, too. Your boss may not have the best time management skills. He may put big projects off until the last possible second, making it nearly impossible for him to produce the needed assignment on time. Or maybe she has personal problems going on in her home life, and sheâs letting them impact her performance (and mood) at the office. Whatever the situation, unless youâve knowingly done something that could be the source of your bossâ foul mood, itâs OK to assume that it hasnât stemmed from anything youâve done. Itâs tough, but try not to take it personally. Do (if Youâre Desperate) Address it Calmly If your bossâ moods are impacting you significantly and youâre ready to confront your boss about a specific situation, do it with a calm and neutral attitude. For example, if your boss is fuming about a big project that isnât going as planned, ask, âI can see youâre frustrated. Is there anything I can do to help?â Or if he rolls his eyes and gives a sarcastic chuckle at a suggestion you present, say, âThat suggestion seemed to annoy you. What do you think would be the best way to approach it?â Your boss may not realize thatâs how heâs coming across- but by pointing it out in a gentle, composed way (without an emotional charge), you may make him realize heâs not communicating effectively. You canât control your bossâ moods- but you can control the way you react to them. My advice? Steel yourself, keep things in perspective, and carry on. Is Bad Advice Killing Your Job Search
Is Bad Advice Killing Your Job Search Is Bad Advice Killing Your Job Search It seems like everyone (and their well-meaning cousin) has a piece of career advice when it comes to job hunting. As one of the leading resume writing agencies in Houston, ResumeSpice has seen firsthand how the advice of even the best-intentioned friends, family members, and trusted colleagues can actually foil your job search and prevent you from landing a new position. So what advice should you toss out of the window? Letâs take a look: Myth #1: A Resume Must be One Page Sure, this was the standard practice years ago, but not anymore. Your resume can be and should be, if youâre highly experienced, more than one page. Itâs better to have an easy-to-read and well-formatted resume thatâs two pages long, than an unreadable and poorly formatted resume thatâs crammed into one page. That said, donât go overboard and submit a resume thatâs longer than it needs to be to reflect your experience. The one page resume myth is so pervasive, we wrote a blog post about it. Myth #2: You Should Apply to As Many Jobs as You Can Hiring managers can quickly identify whether or not youâre right for the job. So if youâre sending your resume like spam mail â" just because âhey, you never knowâ youâre only wasting your time and the hiring managerâs by applying to every position under the sun. Instead, spend your time crafting customized resumes and cover letters for the few positions you truly are a great fit for. Myth #3: Companies Post All Openings If thereâs a company youâre interested in working for â" say you love their product or youâre a loyal user of their service reach out to them, even if they havenât posted a position. In your cover letter, be sure to communicate why you are passionate about working for the company and what you plan on bringing to the table to create a positive impact there. The fact that there isnât a job posted can actually help your chances, as thereâs likely to be less competition. Companyâs love hearing from candidates who have a true passion and desire to work for them. Myth #4: Staffing Agencies Donât Help Back in the day, staffing agencies were used to fill administrative and industrial type positions. Todayâs staffing agencies place highly skilled professionals in fields ranging from accounting to IT to human resources. If youâre someone with plenty of experience under your belt, and youâd like some professional help finding your next job, a staffing agency can help get you there. If youâre ready to begin your job hunt and need a resume that works for you â" let us help! The 7 Coolest Rescue Robots Tackle Almost Any Disaster, Part 1
The 7 Coolest Rescue Robots Tackle Almost Any Disaster, Part 1 The 7 Coolest Rescue Robots Tackle Almost Any Disaster, Part 1 The 7 Coolest Rescue Robots Tackle Almost Any Disaster, Part 1 After disasters strike, buildings collapse, fires rage, and air and water become contaminated, these emergency areas end up as dangerous and inaccessible to humans, often for weeks and months. Sometimes, victims are trapped in unreachable areas while needing urgent medical care such as blood transfusions and medicine. In these situations, robots are becoming increasingly important responders, joining search and rescue teams in their missions. Besides being able to traverse contaminated and dangerous areas, these robots bring a different set of skills to disaster recover site. They can work around the clock without getting tired, they are excellent at repetitive movements, and they are much easier to repair than an injured human. Listen to the latest episode of ASME TechCast: Renewable Energy Experts Shine Light on Solar Farms and Grids MIT researchers have trained their robotic cheetah to see and jump over hurdles as it runs. Image: MIT Some of them venture onto the disaster sites, mapping the area. Some can manipulate human-scale objects like doorknobs and clear piles of debris. Some can navigate autonomously, gathering pollution data or following a humans gaze to inspect specific spots. Others deliver life-saving medications to where they are needed most. And while a robot that can single-handedly rescue a human from a fire or a buildings rubble does not yet exist, many teams across the globe are working on its prototype, whether in its human, animal or even a six-legged form. Here is a list of land, aerial, and aquatic robots in different stages of their training to assist humans in various calamities. Top Story: Tiny Gyroscope Aims to Improve Wearable, Nano Technology 1. The Headless Cheetah. Inspired by the fastest land-animal on Earth, this Cheetah robot aims to help disaster recovery teams locate victims, remove debris, and disassemble some structures. The agile quadruped can run up to 6.4 meters per second, make turns, and hop up onto a chair or a tableup to a height of 60 centimeters. It can also autonomously determine how to avoid or jump over obstacles. Cheetahs creator, MIT Associate Professor Sangbae Kim, anticipates the robot should eventually be able to perform such feats as navigating a contaminated nuclear power plant and even disassemble its parts. Eventually, we hope to develop a machine that can rescue a person, he said. 2. Centauro, a Half-human, Half-horse Scientists at the Italian Institute of Technology (IIT) deemed that a robust disaster recovery robot needs more than a simple human forma creature with four legs, rolling hooves and anthropomorphic upper body would do better. The result is Centauro, which has greater degrees of freedom and stability than typical quadruped robots. That means it can be more mobile and agile in disaster settings. Centauro can perform some human tasks with its hands, such as manipulating tools and doors, and executing some impressive karate moves. In particular, it can karate chop wood with great precision. Battery powered, 1.5 m tall and weighing 93 kg, it can last for 2.5 hours on a single charge. 3. The Unnamed Robot That Follows Your Gaze Built by New York University Tandon School of Engineering, this little quadcopter doesnt yet have a name but already has a reputationit aims to autonomously inspect the worst type of anthropogenic disasters, such as damaged nuclear reactors, and assess the situation. The drone weighs 236 grams, including batteries, and measures 15 cm in length. It can carry three to four types of cameras, taking images of the site and reconstructing the picture in 3D, essentially acting as a long-distance set of eyes for the rescue crew. If connection is available, it can stream the data right back to the crew; if not, it can gather it for later use. Users can wear a set or glasses that communicate with the robot and navigate it to specific spots with their gaze. We are testing it right now inside of a complete reconstruction of a nuclear reactor, said assistant professor Giuseppe Loianno, adding that in the future, the gaze drone will also carry sensors to check radioactivity and other vitals. Lina Zeldovich is an independent writer Read Part 2 to learn about the roach and platypus robots, as well as the TRADR robot that is built to navigate dangerous and unpredictable environments, such as chemicals spills, earthquakes aftermaths, and nuclear disasters.
